Waiting to Go home:

The Documentary highlights a long back history of Orissa behind the migration of its people to different destinations. The migration is attributed to persistent poverty, failure of development programmes, frequent natural disasters like cyclone, flood, drought and continual marginalization of the poor.

The documentary highlights the history of modern migration during the year 1920. People belonging especially to the famine affected areas extensively migrated themselves to Burma (Myanmar) in search of livelihood. During 70s there was also a tremendous shift in trade (Textile) and wealth from Bombay to Surat, which turned out as a major destination for the migrant workers. Gandhidham in Gujarat has also been another destination for the Oriya migrants.

The migration of the poor was not only an attempt to improve their livelihood but also to send a share of their earnings back home to their families. These funds were called as ‘remittance’. Sending money back home was found to be a major problem for these migrants. However most of them choosed informal money transfer system, which would be faster, less expensive & easily available for them. The documentary, therefore deals with the dearth of the empirical study on finding what made these migrants to choose one money remittance channel over the other.

Suchana Adhikar (Right to Information)

Even after 60 year of Independence common people do not have access to Right to Information. They quest for every moment thinking for the day of judgment that will come one day to give their right, their liberty and freedom. This is what happening to each and every common mass of the country. The Govt. has lost its concern for the people suffering the right to information. Finding a solution to this the documentary uncovers the reality on what restrain them to avail their right to access information.

The reality was unearthed when a struggling widow, Kokila Bewa, told her story. She was one among who came across this situation when she compassed across everyday to the local municipal (Bhubaneswar) (BMC) office to lend her husband’s pension (working in BMC who died on 1991), 15 years before. Since then Kokila was running pillar to post to have her share. But she always returned with a lost hope and an empty hand. This pain and the trouble was not only limited to Kokila but also to the other people like Pradip Patri, Karunakar Swain & Manas Ranjan Sahoo (drawn from various places of the state suffering with various government departments on varieties of reasons).

But after the RTI ACT came to existence in October 2005 and our State Govt. promulgated the Right To Information Act on 20th November’ 2005, a new hope and possibilities brought these people nearer to their just and genuine demand and finally they had their access to right to information. Kokila got more than Rs.87, 000 after 15 years, applying through RTI, while Manas Ranjan Sahoo when applied through help line from Local Oriya daily Newspaper under the programme ‘Drive against bribe’ got his mother’s total claim of Rs. 4,780000 within two days, so, also Pradeep Patri got a sigh of relief using RTI Act.
All these happened because of the countrywide campaign ‘ DRIVE AGAINST BRIBE’ to popularize RTI Act spearheaded by few NGOs in Orissa like CYSD and state Soochana Adhikar Manch.

Different kinds of facilities are now provided by the Govt. to ensure transparency, credibility and proper access to information through the Govt. Availing datas on Old age allowance; widow allowance or antordaya card facilities have been made easier through RTI Act.
